Yesterday I watched Dick Costolo’s commencement speech that he gave to graduating students at the University of Michigan. Aside from being very entertaining (mainly due to Dick’s style of comic delivery), there were a few key messages that really hit home. The one that had the biggest impact was the following.
Don’t always worry about what you’re next line is supposed to be, what you’re supposed to do next. There’s no script. Live your life.
Nobody can know for sure what will happen in the future. Attempting to plan the path is mere speculation. After all, life is just one big improv.
The key is to jump at opportunities as they present themselves. The most interesting times in my life have all started with that strange mix of fear and excitement that comes with agreeing to do something that pushes you far out of your comfort zone.
